As I said, I went and saw the movie last night at midnight, not really because I wanted to be the first to see it (although I kinda did) but there really wasn’t any other time this weekend I could get anyone to go with me. And I must say, I’m glad I saw it last night, even if we were in a theater filled with obnoxious high school kids. So lets get to the movie.
I’m not going to put obvious spoilers in here, like the ending, etc, but there will be some so if you do not want to read spoilers, please refrain from reading any further.
The movie opens and we see THE bathroom, despite everyone saying the Donnie Wahlberg did not sign up to be in the movie, he probably has more on screen time than Dina Meyer. So Donnie is still chained to the wall, and it shows immediately after what we see at the end of SAW 2. In typical gruesome fashion, he manages to escape from his chains and what happens after that we see later in the movie. Cut to Troy, the elusive guy in chains. Dina Meyer’s character is called in to investigate the murder thinking it is Jigsaw, but with too many differences she isn’t sure. So that is basically your opening scene without giving too much away, and believe me I left out some stuff. So for the main plot of the movie, which I’ve posted here months ago, A doctor is kidnapped by Amanda (Shawnee Smith) and is brought to Jigsaw’s lair. Her “game” is to keep Jigsaw alive while Jeff makes his way through different tests of his own. Jeff’s backstory is pretty interesting, it involves his son getting killed by a drunk driver and the driver of the car only getting 6 months in prison then released. Jeff has been seeking revenge on the man that killed his boy for awhile and Jigsaw knows this. If he makes it through all of his tests he will be face to face with the man that killed his son, what he chooses to do with him is up to him. So that is the basic premise of the movie without getting into it too much.
So now, my take on the movie….. better than SAW 2, for sure, better than SAW? ehhh, probably not just for the fact that the original was just that, original. The ending of this one isn’t as, i guess, crazy as the first 2, but there is definitely misdirection from the very start of the movie. Well I guess I shouldn’t say the ending isn’t as crazy as the first 2, because the last 10-15 minutes of the movie were pretty ridiculous and I really hope this movie does well because know I’m geeked for a 4th one. My only gripes with the movie, which were pretty much my only gripes with the first one, was the acting. Angus Macfadyen, who plays Jeff, was a little off on some of his lines and Shawnee and Donnie were too. I mean, I guess you could say the writing wasn’t as good as it could have been, some of the dialogue sounded a little weird at times, like Donnie yelling “Mother fucking bitch, I’ll kill you, you mother fucking bitch” over and over again. After a few times I think they should have but the “bitch” part out, but watch the movie and you’ll see. And honestly Jeff didn’t have too many lines, but the few he did seemed a little off, Shawnee too. But Tobin “Jigsaw” Bell is right on the money in this one. Everytime he opened his mouth it made me want to listen to everything he had to say. And I was actually really surprised how quiet the audience was during the whole movie, considering it was a room full of drunk high school kids. Ok, lets get to the good stuff, the traps. I am now going to describe what the traps are, they are all in the trailers, but if you don’t want to know please do not read the remainder of this paragraph. So obviously we open with Troy being chained to the walls/ceiling/floors of a classroom with a rudimentary bomb with a jar filled with nails next to it, kinda like a makeshift claymore. Then we meet Jeff who has to make his way through a series of tests in which he has to save other people from certain traps. The catch to all the people in the traps are they all had something to do with either the death of his son, or the release of the killer. So basically we have the only witness to the crimes in the first trap, she is strung up in a freezer with freezing cold water spraying on her. Now this trap got me a bit, only for the fact that the way it ended seemed a little off. The woman ends up getting frozen into almost a solid block of ice….. I dont understand how that would have happened, but its possible it could have been liquid nitrogen or something, but still it wouldn’t have been a solid block of ice. To save her, there is a key somewhere in the room, the Jigsaw tape tells him exactly where it is, but this is a test, it’s not going to be painless to get. The key also unlocks the door to get through the room and onto the next test. The next test finds Jeff having to burn all of his son’s possessions in order to save the judge that sentenced his son’s killer. The judge is chained to the bottom of a large tub which is being filled with pig guts, very fresh pig guts….. riiiight. After this test lies the driver that killed Jeff’s son and this is one of the most twisted traps ever, no pun intended, the crucifix. I won’t tell you what happens from here on out, just go see the movie.
So overall I enjoyed the movie very much, I don’t think the series has lost anything yet which is surprising for sequels and unheard of for trilogies. If anything the story has gained more of a philosophic outlook on life, I just can’t get over how well Tobin Bell plays the Jigsaw character. If you’re a fan of the SAW movies there is no doubt in my mind that you will enjoy every moment of this one, and don’t bother trying to figure out the end, I don’t think you will. I thought I did, but I was way off, and I’m glad I was, these writers are fucking sick and twisted and I love them! So go check this one out tonight or this weekend, they’ve already tapped a few people to write the 4th, but they want to see the outcome of the box office so although I’m sure this will be #1, go check it out and lets break some fucking records (haha prolly wont happen, but I can wish right). I really don’t want to see this series end. The only time I wish for a series to end is if the most recent one was a giant pile of shit, but on the other hand you’d always love to see a trilogy go out on top and have that lasting feeling for ever, as a trilogy. But what can I say, I’m a greedy bastard, I want more especially after that ending…. I’m still thinking about it. So please leave your comments and let me know what you thought of the movie.
